Hazel Reid is Copy Editor at Marketing Essentials Lab.
How did you get started in your career? What were the first steps you took, and what led you to join Marketing Essentials Lab?
I enjoyed English at school and fortunately I was well taught grammar and spelling. After University I did a secretarial course where I learned to touch-type and then did temp work. One job I did was with a business magazine and at the end of the week I was asked to stay on permanently. I worked for a business publishing agency producing commercial magazines, staff, membership and corporate magazines. I kept in contact with one of the temp agencies and did occasional work for them. I found I was doing regular work, which I enjoyed, for someone called Nim, One day Nim phoned me and asked if I would like to work with MEL? The rest, as they say, is history!
What do you check for when you are editing or proofreading content for MEL?
I check for spelling errors and grammatical mistakes. I also look out for repetition – the same word or phrase used too often in a sentence or paragraph. I make sure that the text makes sense and check that unfamiliar words or contractions are correct.
What is your favourite aspect of B2B Marketing?
The helpful information, suggestions and advice that is so generously given by one business to another
What is the most enjoyable side of your role at MEL?
Learning all sorts of things from what to grow on your high rise balcony to the kind of glamourous furniture from which to view what you have grown. Not forgetting safety management procedures when dealing with aluminium for the nuclear industry.
